Author Bio

Mary Cuffe Perez, Galway, New York, is author of four books, Barn Stories, a collection of creative non-fiction, published in 2017 by North Country Books, a novel-in-verse, Nothing by Name (Shaggy Dog Press, 2012), a poetry collection, The Woman of Too Many Days(Calyx Press, 2000) and a children’s novel, Skylar (Penguin, 2008).  Her latest book, Gnarlys of the North Woods, will be published by Hobblebush Press in 2019.

Much of her writing is natural history and local history-based.

Mary has written feature articles for Adirondack Life, The ConservationistYankeeNorthern Woodlands and other magazines.  She has published poems and short stories in numerous literary journals, including Calyx Journal, Blueline, Seattle Review, Voices International and more.  In 2013, she published (The Village Press) a booklet of memoirs of nursing home residents, entitled What We Keep: Life Stories from Maplewood Manor, funded through a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. 

Her literary-social history project, the Story Quilt, and resulting book, Story Quilt: Poems of a Place, sponsored by the Galway Public Library, won the Award for Library Excellence in 2007 from the NYS Education Department.  For this award the tiny Galway Public Library won over all other libraries in New York State.

·       Best Feature Environmental Article from the International Regional Magazine Association for Lake George’s Murky Future (2004)

·       Two Artist Awards for Nothing by Name in 2009 and What We Keep in 2012 and two Program Awards from the New York State Council on the Arts for Story Quilt (2005 and 2006)

·       KIND Award from the American Humane Society, for Skylar (2009)
